- Always Remember
- Be a good housekeeper. Keep your work area clean and orderly and free of loose and unnecessary objects.
- When walking through a congested area carrying a pen, pencil or other sharp pointed article, you should carry it with the point down in such a manner that you will not cause injury to others.
- Keep aisles clear at all times, pick up loose objects and dispose of properly.
- You are expected to be familiar with and to observe rules governing parking and traffic conditions.
- Be particular in handling paper that you do not put your fingers, face or lips on the edges.
- Keep flammable material/objects and glass out of wastebaskets.
- Report defective equipment to your supervisor.
- Never stand on chairs or stools.
- Never sit on the front edge only of office chairs. Sit with your weight properly back into the chair.
- Keep fingers away from the point of operation when using staples, punches, paper cutters, etc. Use tools in the right way.
- Always keep scissors, knives and letter openers in the front part of desk drawers.
- No machines should be operated without permission and instructions by your supervisor.
- Do not remove, readjust, or change safety guards or protective devices, unless instructed to do so by your supervisor.
- Only authorized employees may start electrically-driven equipment.
- Only duly instructed employees are permitted to change fuses or make repairs to electrical equipment.
- Report to your supervisor immediately all defective electrical wiring such as bare wire, frayed cords, loose conduit, etc.
- Power and telephone outlets and connections should be installed in such a manner that they do not create a tripping hazard.
- Cords, when temporarily used, should be made noticeable by guards or markings.
- Do not attempt to lift or carry anything that is too heavy or bulky to be handled safely by one person. If a lifting device cannot be used, get help.
- Always open and close drawers by using handle. All drawers should be closed when not in use.
- Avoid overloading upper section of filing cabinets or standing on or in lower drawers.
- Open doors slowly, and when going through double doors, use the door to the right.
- Learn the location of the fire extinguisher and fire alarm boxes in your work area.
- Fire hazards should be reported to your supervisor.
- Never block fire equipment.
Section 5-2 Route Driver
- Inspect the vehicle for broken glass, oil leaks, gasoline leaks, or other damages. Report all problems.
- Make sure all lights and the horn are in good condition.
- When operating a university vehicle, you must
- When the heater or air conditioner is in use, crack one or two windows to reduce carbon monoxide hazards. wear lap and shoulder belts.
- Obey all speed limit and traffic laws.
- When backing look over right shoulder or use each outside mirror. If unsure of a clear path, have someone guide you.
- If the vehicle is equipped with a power lift, it should only be used by trained operators and only if it is in good operating condition.
- When lowering a power lift, make sure feet are clear.
- Ensure that all cargo is secure, so it will not shift.
- When parked on a street, use four way flashers.
- Only authorized university personnel may ride in a university vehicle.
- Alcohol and other controlled substances must never be used.
- Prescription and over-the-counter medicine should be used with care. They may cause drowsiness or other side effects.
- Check for on-coming traffic before exiting or entering a vehicle.
- Be a defensive driver.
Section 5-3 Forklift Operator
